Combining Ink & Colored Pencil by Janie Gildow
Ink works well for color and value (as a modified grisaille) under colored pencil, but due to the dyes from which ink is made, many of the colors, especially the bright ones are notorious for being fugitive. So when you use ink, mix colors that are dull and use them for their gray value. Then apply colored pencil over the ink to enhance and enrich the color.
In this exercise, you’ll establish an ink color value foundation and then complete the red grapes by punching up the color with layers of colored pencil. The grape painting is titled, “Prelude” by Janie Gildow CPSA 7×7″ Colored Pencil and Ink collection of the artist

1 Develop Grape values by Layering
After sketching your grapes and cast shadow, start painting the grapes. Mix red, brown, purple and gray inks to make a raisin color. Divide the color into thirds. Add enough water to one part to create a middle value. To another, add more water to create a lighter value. To the last, add a small amount of water for a darker and more concentrated color.
Use combinations of these washes to create changes in value in the grapes. Apply the lightest wash to all the grapes. Leave the lightest grapes with only one light-value wash. Begin to darken the rest by applying another wash of the lightest value over the first. Use your middle value to darken others further. To some, apply only one middle-value wash, and to others, apply two. To complete the grapes, use the darkest wash. On some grapes apply one dark value wash right over all the others. On the darkest grapes continue to apply two or even three washes of the darkest value.
2 Lay in the Cast Shadows With Ink
Once the grapes have dried, start painting the cast shadows. Mix orange and blue ink, adding the orange a little at a time. The color of the shadow should still be blue, but a muted and soft blue. Add enough water to create a medium value wash. Use a brush and clean water only, wet the area of the shadow. Apply the blue wash to the damp paper. It will fill the area and will be easy to apply smoothly.
Some of the grape color reflects into the shadow, so while the shadow is still wet, add a little of the middle-value grape color to it along the edge where it meets the grapes. Let the color softly spread into the blue.
3 Complete the Grapes with Colored Pencil
Each grape is different from all the others so complete the grapes by varying the color combinations slightly. Establish the contours with the darkest values, enrich the local color with the midtones. Create the bloom on the grapes with Cloud Blue.
Start by developing the contours of the grapes with the darkest values: Black Grape, Black Cherry, Tuscan Red and Dark Purple (A).
Enrich the local color mix with the midtones: Henna, Terra Cotta, Tuscan Red and Slate Grey (b).
Add the light and the bloom with the lightest value: Cloud Blue (C)
Using circular strokes, go over the entire grape with the Colorless Blender to smooth and even the color (D). Work from light to dark, but check the pencil point often and, if it picks up color, wipe it on a tissue so that you don’t transfer color where you don’t want it.
4 Complete the Cast Shadow and Stem with Colored Pencil
First, in the part of the cast shadow closest to the grapes, lightly layer a combination of Rosy Beige and Deco Orange to suggest the reflected color of the grapes. Reduce pressure towards the outside edge of the shadow to gradually lighten the application.
Second, layer Slate Grey evenly over the entire shadow.
Third, go back into the shadow nearest the grapes and boost the reflected color with a light layer of Terra Cotta.
Apply a light layer of Limepeel to the entire stem to establish a base for the other colors. Then go back over the stem and apply Olive Green to create value changes as shown. Apply Goldenrod and Terra Cotta to warm the greens. Then add Black Grape to suggest the shadows and value changes. Apply it right over the other colors to darken them as needed. It will mellow the other colors and allow them to look more natural.
